If you live abroad, you can apply for your German passport in person at a German mission abroad or, in some countries, at an honorary consular official.
If you are a German citizen and live abroad, you can apply for your passport at the German diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate) responsible for you or, in some countries, at an honorary consular official. You must always apply for a passport in person.
If you have lost your passport or it has been stolen, the diplomatic mission abroad can issue you with a travel document for your return to Germany. This travel document for return is issued for the duration of the intended trip, but for a maximum of one month. It only entitles you to return to Germany, but not to travel on to other countries. If you lose your passport, please contact the nearest diplomatic mission abroad.

- valid or previous ID (passport, identity card, child ID, child passport), if available

- Birth certificate or marriage certificate, if applicable
- Proof of your habitual residence abroad, e.g. foreign residence permit, registration certificate from your host country, rental agreement, telephone, electricity or gas bills.

For applications abroad to honorary consuls, the costs listed above apply:
- plus a fee for the services of the honorary consul of EUR 33.60 to EUR 96.50. The fee depends on the location (zone level)
- plus the reimbursement of expenses (e.g. costs for postage and business trips)
You must apply for your passport in person:
- Please contact your local diplomatic mission abroad and make an appointment
- Appear in person to submit your application, identify yourself and give your fingerprints.
- Passports are produced centrally and sent to the diplomatic mission abroad once they are ready
- When the passport is ready, it will be sent to you, if you agreed this when you made your application, or you will be notified by telephone or e-mail that your passport is ready for collection.
