Are you a citizen of a member state of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, have obtained an educational qualification outside Germany that entitles you to provide independent assistance in tax matters and would like to work as a tax consultant in Germany?
Provided you are professionally qualified, the first step is to take an aptitude test before an examination board at the highest tax authority in the federal state in which you wish to work.

If you are unsure whether you meet the requirements for admission to the aptitude test, you can request binding information from the relevant Chamber of Tax Consultants.
Examinations in Hesse
The aptitude test in Hesse is conducted by an examination board of the Hessian Ministry of Finance. The examination, which you can only take in German, consists of a written and an oral part.
Deadlines may have to be observed when submitting the application. Please contact the Hessen Chamber of Tax Consultants.
If you fail the exam, you can retake it up to 2 times.

Admission to the aptitude test is subject to the following conditions, among others:
- Citizenship of a member state of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland
- Diploma that entitles you to provide assistance in tax matters in your country
or - If the profession of tax advisor is not regulated in your country: completion of a course of study that prepares you for the profession and one year of professional experience

Please note:
- If you do not pay the examination fee on time, you will be deemed to have waived admission to the examination.
- If you withdraw an application before the decision is made, half of the fee will be refunded.

Application for admission to the examination
You submit the application for admission to the aptitude test in writing to the Hessen Chamber of Tax Consultants; the required form is available on the website of the Hessen Chamber of Tax Consultants under Tax Consultants → Tax Consultant Examination:
- Complete the application and compile the necessary evidence.
- Submit your application documents to the office named on the form.
- The Chamber of Tax Consultants will check whether the information is complete and correct and, if necessary, will make further inquiries.
- You will receive written notification as to whether you have been admitted to the examination
Aptitude test
- You will be informed of the date, venue and details of the examination procedure in the written invitation.
- In the written examination, you will complete 2 assignments on 2 consecutive days under supervision.
- You will receive written notification of the result of the written examination - together with the invitation to the oral examination, if applicable.
Please note: You will only be informed of the result in writing; please do not make any enquiries by telephone or verbally.
If you miss the oral examination without sufficient excuse, you will be deemed to have failed the examination as a whole; otherwise you will be given a make-up date.
The Hessian Ministry of Finance will issue you with a certificate confirming that you have passed the examination, which you can use to apply for appointment by the Chamber of Tax Consultants.
