If you would like to support the Federal Agency for Technical Relief on a voluntary basis, you can sign up as a volunteer.
As a THW volunteer, you will be trained for specific tasks and also take part in operations. You can become involved in THW on a full-time or voluntary basis.
You can join the THW for a short time or for life. Everyone has the same rights and the same duties in this employment relationship, regardless of how long and for what reasons they joined.
The THW is an organization that protects the population and is therefore dependent on its emergency personnel being particularly reliable. It is an important prerequisite that you regularly participate in the activities of the THW - especially your local branch. Training and service events ensure that the THW is ready for action when it is needed. For this reason, volunteers also have duties that must be fulfilled. In addition to participating in these events, you must of course comply with the THW regulations.
Children from the age of six and young people up to the age of 17 can also take part as young helpers. At THW-Jugend e.V., they have the opportunity to learn about the technology and values of THW in a fun way, take on responsibility, train their social skills and gain valuable experience.
Voluntary work in the THW is not remunerated. If you take part in exercises, courses or training events during your working hours, you will still receive your normal salary. Your employer can then have the THW compensate you for the lost work. However, you should still talk to your employer about your involvement in THW. Self-employed persons may receive compensation for loss of earnings in accordance with the THW compensation guidelines.
As a THW employee, you enter into a special type of employment relationship under public law (with the Federal Republic of Germany). The THW Act regulates this employment relationship.
