You can apply for a category AM, A1, A2 and A driving license.
With the AM driving license category, you can drive two- and three-wheeled mopeds and four-wheeled light motor vehicles.
With category A1, you can drive motorcycles with an engine capacity of up to 125 cc and an output of up to 11 kW.
With driving license category A2, you can drive motorcycles with an output of up to 35 kW and no more than 70 kW.
With category A, you can drive motorcycles and three-wheeled motor vehicles.
The AM, A1, A2 and A driving license categories are issued for an unlimited period.
- Valid identity card or passport (with current registration certificate if applicable)
- Application for a driver's license, if applicable
- a biometric photograph in accordance with the provisions of the Passport Ordinance (size 45x35 mm, portrait format, frontal view). Further information can be found in the photo sample table of the Bundesdruckerei.
- Eye test certificate in accordance with Annex 6 No. 1.1 FeV (not older than two years)
- Proof of participation in a first aid training course
- You must have your main residence in the Federal Republic of Germany
- The minimum age for category AM is 15 years.
- The minimum age for category A1 is 16 years.
- The minimum age for category A2 is 18 years.
- The minimum age for category A is 24 years for motorcycles with direct access, 21 years for three-wheeled motor vehicles with a power output of more than 15 kW or 20 years for motorcycles with at least two years' previous possession of category A2.
You must apply to the competent driving license authority for a driving license for categories AM, A1, A2 or A.
The processing time depends on the workload of the responsible driving license authority.
The application for the initial issue of a driving license expires if the theory test has not been passed within twelve months of receipt of the test order or the practical test has not been passed within twelve months of passing the theory test.

The first issue of a driving license is the issue of a license to persons who have never held a driving license before
- the AM category entitles the holder to drive two- and three-wheeled mopeds and four-wheeled light motor vehicles
- Driving license category A1 entitles the holder to drive motorcycles with an engine capacity of up to 125 cc and an output of up to 11 kW, where the ratio of power to weight does not exceed 0.1 kW/kg, as well as three-wheeled motor vehicles with symmetrically arranged wheels and an engine capacity of more than 50 cm3 for internal combustion engines or a maximum design speed of more than 45 km/h and with an output of up to 15 kW.
- Driving license category A2 entitles the holder to drive motorcycles with a power output of up to 35 kW, a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.2 kW/kg and an output power of no more than 70 kW
- with driving license category A, the applicant can drive motorcycles and three-wheeled motor vehicles.
