If you are studying dentistry at a Hessian university and would like to take a section of the dental examination (state examination), you must apply for admission.
The dental examination (state examination) is part of dental training and must be taken in three stages. Students of dentistry at a Hessian university who wish to take the dental examination must register for and be admitted to this examination in advance.
The licensing regulations for dentists stipulate which documents and information must be enclosed with the application.
1. First section of the dental examination
- Signed application form
- Proof of identity
- Proof of higher education entrance qualification and, in the case of certificates obtained abroad, also the letter of recognition from the competent authority under state law
- transcript of records or the documents that take the place of the transcript of records at the respective university as proof of study periods
- Proof of regular and successful participation in the prescribed courses (in accordance with Annex 1 of the ZApprO)
- Proof of training in first aid
- Certificate of nursing service
2. Second section of the dental examination
- Signed application form
- the study record book or the documents that replace the study record book at the respective university as proof of study periods
- Proof of regular and successful participation in the prescribed courses (in accordance with Annex 2 of the ZApprO)
- if the first section was not completed before the HLfGP:
- Certificate of passing the first section of the dental examination
- Proof of identity
3. Third section of the dental examination
- Signed application form
- the study record book or the documents that replace the study record book at the respective university as proof of study periods
- Proof of regular and successful participation in the prescribed courses (in accordance with Annexes 3 and 4 of the ZApprO)
- Proof in accordance with the model in Annex 12 on the acquisition of expertise in radiation protection for the field of application of intraoral X-ray diagnostics with dental tube devices, panoramic tomographs, cephalometric radiographs of the skull
- Certificate of the clinical traineeship
- if the second section was not completed before the HLfGP:
- Proof of identity
- Certificate of passing the second section of the dental examination
The dental examination (state examination) is taken in three sections:
- The first section of the dental examination is taken after studying dentistry for at least two years.
- The second section of the dental examination is taken after studying dentistry for at least one year after passing the first section of the dental examination.
- The third section of the dental examination is taken after studying dentistry for at least two years after passing the second section of the dental examination.
- Fixed costs: Examination fee EUR 95.00"
- The fee must also be paid if admission is refused or withdrawal is declared after admission. If the application is withdrawn before admission or rejection has been granted, a reduced fee of EUR 40.00 must be paid.
- Admission to the individual sections of the dental examination must be applied for online:
- The application is made electronically
- Confirmation of receipt will be sent by e-mail immediately after the online application has been submitted.
- The application for admission can be withdrawn without giving reasons as long as the notification of admission or rejection of admission has not yet been delivered. The application must be withdrawn in writing.
- The summons to the first and second sections of the examination as well as to the oral-practical part of the third section will be sent via the electronic mailbox no later than 5 calendar days before the first examination date.
- The summons to the written part of the third section will be sent 7 calendar days before the examination date.
- You will receive further details on the examination venue, start and duration of the examination, seat number, procedure and technique of the examination process with the summons.
- The invitation must be printed out and brought to the examination.
- Certificates of passing the examination will be sent by ordinary post. Notifications of failures will be sent with a postal delivery certificate.
- The summons can only be sent to a domestic address.
- First and second sections: The summons to the first and second sections of the dental examination will be sent via the electronic mailbox no later than five calendar days before the examination date. In accordance with Section 31 and Section 45 of the Licensing Regulations for Dentists (ZApprO)
- Third section: The summons for the written part of the third section of the dental examination will be sent no later than seven calendar days before the examination date and the summons for all examination dates of the oral-practical part of the third section of the dental examination will be sent no later than five calendar days before the first examination date. In accordance with § 61 Licensing Regulations for Dentists (ZApprO)
The application deadline for all examination sections is January 10 or June 10.

- Students of dentistry at Hessian universities who wish to take a section of the dental examination (state examination in dentistry) must be admitted to the respective sections.
