If you want to drive your vehicle with a trailer over 750 kg, you need a class B extension by the code number 96. If you want to drive light motorcycles up to 125 cc without a motorcycle license, you need an extension by the key number 196.
Under certain conditions, you can extend your category B driving licence. With the code number B96 you may drive motor vehicles of category B with a trailer with a maximum permissible mass of more than 750 kg, provided that the maximum permissible mass exceeds 3,500 kg but does not exceed 4,250 kg. The code number B196 allows you to drive motorcycles (also with sidecar) with a maximum displacement of 125 cm³, an engine power of not more than 11 kW, where the ratio of power to weight does not exceed 0.1 kW/kg. For this purpose, you complete the corresponding driver training according to Annex 7a (key number B96) or 7b (key number B196) Driving Licence Ordinance (FeV).

For the extension by the key number 96:
- You must be at least 18 years old, in the case of accompanying driving 17 years old
- You must have completed driver training of at least seven hours and be able to prove it (at least 2.5 hours of theoretical training, at least 3.5 hours of practical training)
- You must be in possession of a category B driving licence or meet the conditions for issuing it
For the extension by key number 196:
- You must be at least 25 years old
- You must have been in Class B for at least five years
- You must be able to complete and prove nine teaching units of 90 minutes each (four teaching units theory and five teaching units practice)
- The period between the completion of the driver training and the entry of the code number 196 shall not exceed one year.
The driving licence authority charges in accordance with the scale of charges for road traffic measures.
You complete the respective driver training according to Appendix 7 a (code 96) or Appendix 7 b FeV (code 96). When applying for registration, proof of driver training in accordance with the model set out in Appendix 7a or 7b shall be provided. A new driving test is not necessary.
The processing time depends on the workload of the respective driving licence authority.
The period between the completion of the driver training and the entry of the code number 196 shall not exceed one year.
