The Hessian state coat of arms shows in the blue shield a 9 times silver and red divided rising lion with golden claws. On the shield rests a thread of golden foliage with fruits formed by blue pearls. The Hessian state coat of arms is protected as a sovereign symbol of the state and may only be used by the state organs of the state of Hesse. The use for scientific, educational or collecting purposes is permitted and does not require separate permission.

Since it has been shown that there is a need to express the attachment to the state of Hesse through the use of a symbol, the "Hessenzeichen" was created in 1981. It consists of the slightly modified and stylized heraldic figure of the lion and can be used by anyone either in the national colors white or red. The Hessenzeichen is available as a free download on the website of the Hessian Ministry of the Interior and for Sport.
