A comprehensive school combines various courses of education in one school: the Hauptschule, the Realschule and the intermediate level (Sekundarstufe I) of the gymnasium course of education. All qualifications awarded in these individual courses of education can be obtained by pupils at a comprehensive school.
A comprehensive school can comprise a primary level (grades 1 to 4) and a grammar school upper level. If a comprehensive school concludes with lower secondary level, the pupils can attend secondary schools.
Comprehensive schools in Hesse are organized according to school type (cooperative comprehensive school - KGS) or across school types (integrated comprehensive school - IGS).
