You attend one of the following types of school as a pupil or trainee:
Secondary general school and vocational school (including classes of all forms of basic vocational training) from grade 10 if you cannot live with your parents due to your training,
Technical and vocational secondary school class (without completed vocational training) if you do not live with your parents,
Vocational school class or vocational school class (without completed vocational training) if it provides a vocational qualification in a course of at least two years,
Fach- und Fachoberschulklasse (with completed vocational training), Abendhauptschule, Berufsaufbauschule, Abendrealschule, Abendgymnasium and Kolleg or höhere Fachschule or Akademie.
You are a German national,
you or one of your parents must have been employed in Germany for a certain period of time before starting your training,
you must have been employed in Germany for at least 5 years beforehand.
Your parents must have been gainfully employed in Germany for at least three years during the last 6 years or you must have certain residence permits for reasons of international law, humanitarian or political reasons and the required waiting period or gainful employment.
Internship: You will receive BAföG for your school attendance, your training and the internship, provided that this is prescribed by the training regulations and lasts at least 12 weeks in the case of internships abroad.
If you would like to apply for BAföG for your school education online, first either activate the online ID function of your ID card (eID) or open a De-Mail account. You must register for both. The procedure depends on the federal state in which you are completing your education or where your parents are resident. If you would like to submit the application in paper form, go to the BAföG website and download the application forms that apply to you. If you do not know which forms apply to you, you can use the application assistant on the BAföG website: You answer a few questions and the assistant will tell you which forms you need to submit. You can fill in the forms on the computer and print them out or print them out and fill them in by hand. The application must be signed. Attach the necessary supporting documents. Send the completed application forms directly to the Office for Educational Support responsible for you. The Office for Educational Support will check the documents for completeness. Missing documents will be requested. If the application is complete, it will be checked and the decision will be communicated in a notification.
Financial support for school education under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) is
possible if parents earn comparatively little or the requirements for parent-independent BAföG are met, if the trainee has little or no income and assets and if the trainee attends school full-time.
Pupils receive the entire grant in monthly installments as a full subsidy with no repayment obligation.
This also includes trainees who are in school-based training.
Internships are only funded if they are a compulsory internship within the curriculum.
