§ Section 19 (2) of the German Air Traffic Regulations (LuftVO)
If you would like to release balloons at an event, such as a wedding, you may need a permit under aviation law and/or air traffic control clearance. The location and the number of balloons you wish to release are decisive.
No application is required if the place of ascent is more than 1.5 km away from airfields.
If the location is less than 1.5 km from an airport, you will need a permit from the district government. The application can be made online.
Depending on the number and location of the ascent, additional permission from the responsible air traffic control authority (Deutsche Flugsicherung or DFS Aviation Services) may be required
No additional permission from air traffic control is required if
- fewer than 500 balloons are requested
- the ascent site is more than 1.5 km away from the boundary of airfields
- the balloons are not bundled together (so-called balloon clusters),
- no flammable gas is used for inflation,
- no hard objects (wood, plastic, metal, sparklers, glow sticks, glow sticks, LEDs) are attached in or on the balloons.
The consent of the landowner must be obtained independently.
Applications can only be submitted for ascent locations within Germany.
