Would you like your child to start school even though he or she was born after the school enrollment deadline, September 30? Then you can apply for early school enrollment.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, every child who reaches the age of six by the beginning of September 30th is required to attend school on August 1st of the same year. All children who turn six on October 1 or later are not required to attend school until the following calendar year.

The school management decides on the admission of the child after detailed consultation with the parents, taking into account the child's age. Admission is always possible if the child can be expected to work successfully at school. There is no lower age limit in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The head teacher decides on admission to an elementary school. Registration itself does not mean that your child has been accepted into the school.

• Your child is not yet 6 years old on 01.10. of the year you plan to start school. There is no lower age limit in North Rhine-Westphalia.

You can also apply for early admission for your child directly at the elementary school of your choice on the announced registration dates for the elementary school.

Registration takes place together with the child at the desired elementary school.

If there are indications during the registration appointment that your child does not have sufficient German language skills and therefore a successful participation in school is significantly at risk, a language assessment will be carried out according to a standardized procedure.

After registration, you will receive an invitation for your child's school entrance examination from your local health authority.

Registration for elementary school does not automatically mean that a child has actually been accepted.

The head teacher decides on the actual admission to the school after the registration process has been completed. If the school is unable to accept all of the children registered, a selection procedure will take place in accordance with § 1 of the Primary School Education Regulations (AO-GS).

Once the enrollment process has been completed, you will receive notification of your child's admission from the school management (admission letter).

Please note that even in the case of online registration, a personal appointment at the school is necessary for the head teacher to decide whether to admit your child.
