According to the State Nature Conservation Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (LNatSchG NRW), anyone wishing to ride out in the open countryside or in the forest requires a valid riding license plate that is clearly visible on both sides of the horse's bridle.

A riding license plate consists of 2 yellow plates (base plates) with annually changing colored stickers (rider stickers) two pieces (one per base plate). The stickers are valid for one calendar year and must be present when riding for the current year. This is the extension of the rider stickers for existing basic carriers.

Riding license plates and riding stickers are issued by the nature conservation or environmental departments of the respective district or city administration. Where they are to be applied for depends on the owner's place of residence and not on the location of the horse. If you are already in possession of a riding license plate from another federal state, your riding license plate is also valid in NRW for the duration of the respective calendar year.

If a riding license plate with valid rider stickers is available for the current year, only new rider stickers are required for the next year, which are affixed to the riding license plates. In this case, a subsequent application must be submitted.
