If injured game, whether alive or already dead, is lying on the road, secure the accident site with a warning triangle and/or hazard warning lights if possible to protect following traffic and avoid further accidents.
Dead game should only be removed from the road if this is possible without endangering yourself.
If the animal you have hit is still fleeing, do not chase after it, but only mark the scene of the accident and the direction of escape.
Please stay as far away from the injured animal as possible, because the closer you get to the injured animal, the more stressed it becomes. There is also a risk that the animal will try to escape and run onto the road again or that you will be endangered.
If you have caused or witnessed the accident, report it to the police on 110. If people have been injured in the collision, call 112 and provide first aid.
Advice on avoiding wildlife accidents:
As a general rule, the following applies at unclear forest or field edges: Slow down. As soon as an animal appears on the road or at the roadside, you should immediately reduce your speed, dim your lights and sound your horn. As soon as the acute danger situation is over, continue to be careful. Another dangerous situation could quickly arise on the road. If a collision is unavoidable, hold the steering wheel firmly, try to keep the vehicle in lane and brake as hard as possible. Avoid risky evasive maneuvers.
There is an increased risk of accidents
- in the morning and evening
- in July / August during the deer rut,
in the field/forest transition area.
Stop in a safe place and keep calm. The first thing to do is to secure yourself and the accident site. Switch on your hazard warning lights, put on your safety vest and set up a warning triangle. If anyone has been injured in the collision, call 112 and provide first aid. Call the police on 110. If the animal has been injured in the collision, do not touch it. Injured animals can react aggressively. If possible, pull dead animals to the side of the road (not without gloves) or mark them with a warning triangle, for example.
Leaving the scene of an accident is not legally punishable as a hit-and-run. Nevertheless, every driver should take responsibility and report the accident properly. The damage to the vehicle can be settled via an existing partial or comprehensive insurance policy.
It is not permitted to take the game you hit with you, otherwise you could be charged with poaching.
Depending on the situation of the individual case, the insurance will cover the damage to the vehicle for those with partial or fully comprehensive insurance. The prerequisite is that the wildlife accident is proven. To this end, the persons or bodies that must be informed of the accident issue the relevant certificates.
