If you move out of your home permanently, you must deregister if you are not moving into another home in Germany. You can find out more here.
If you move out of an apartment and do not move into another apartment in Germany, you must deregister.
The most important cases are deregistering a secondary residence or moving abroad.
If you move within Germany, you do not have to deregister. It is sufficient to register with your new municipality.
The following documents are required:
- Identity documents of all persons to be deregistered
The following requirements must be met:
- permanent departure from the main residence without moving into a new main residence in Germany or
- definitive abandonment of the secondary residence.
In the case of persons under the age of 16, care must be taken to ensure that they are deregistered by the person from whose home they are moving out.
The procedure is as follows:
In person:
- Present yourself in person at the competent authority and
- present your identity documents.
In writing:
- submit the deregistration form or declare the departure informally in writing,
- enclose certified copies of the identity documents of all persons to be deregistered.
Deregistration deadline: at the earliest one week before moving out, otherwise mandatory within two weeks of moving out.
Deregistration at the earliest: one week before moving out.
