Polling assistants are deployed on election day as members of the electoral boards or as assistants to conduct the election in the polling station. Their tasks include, for example
- Checking voter eligibility based on the electoral roll,
- issuing the ballot papers,
- releasing the ballot box for the ballot paper to be inserted,
- helping to determine the election result.
Working as an election assistant is an honorary position. You must perform your duties impartially and are obliged to maintain confidentiality about any matters that come to your attention during your official duties. You may not cover your face while carrying out your duties.
Polling assistants are appointed by the municipal electoral authority. Preference is given to electoral assistants who volunteer for this honorary position. However, they can also be obliged to do so.
As a volunteer poll worker, you will receive an expense allowance (known as a "refreshment allowance") for your work.
The procedure is as follows:
- If you are volunteering, you register with the electoral office.
- You can also be required to volunteer as an election assistant if not enough election assistants volunteer.
- Regardless of whether you volunteer or are required to volunteer, the mayor will appoint you to the electoral board.
