The water book is a register containing legal relationships relating to water management. The primary purpose of the water register is to inform the competent authorities about existing uses and developments in water bodies and areas protected by water management legislation. The Water Book is also a register and tool for the implementation of the European Union's Water Framework Directive. It also provides environmental information for the public.
You must apply for access to the water register. Information from the Water Book is provided by the competent authorities in the individual federal states.
In particular, the following are entered in the water register
- Permits, for example for geothermal energy, wastewater discharges or groundwater extraction
- permits
- Water protection areas
- Construction or expansion of bodies of water
- designated flood areas
- risk areas
- Old rights and powers
Written or verbal application (informal) with information on the location, type and purpose of the water use.
- You can apply for an extract from the water register using the online form.
- Enter information in the online form about the water body in question, its location and/or the rights holder. If known, enter the water register number.
- The water authority will compile the information you require and send it to you.
- Appeal if necessary (depending on the federal state)
- Subsequent action for an obligation before the administrative court
- Water book provision
- The water book is a central documentation of permitted groundwater and surface water uses.
- An application must be submitted for information in the water book.
