If you have completed training in the European Economic Area that allows you to work as a lawyer, you can have this qualification recognized. This recognition allows you to work as a lawyer in Germany.
If your training differs significantly from the requirements, you must first take an aptitude test.
If you have been admitted as a European lawyer in Germany for three years, you can apply directly to the Bar Association for admission as a lawyer.
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form in German
- Proof of eligibility for direct access to the profession of European lawyer, in the original or as a copy
- Proof that more than half of the minimum training period was completed in one of the countries listed in Section 16 (2) No. 1 EuRAG or, in the cases of Section 16 (2) EuRAG, a certificate of at least three years of professional practice
- a declaration in German stating whether an application has already been submitted in accordance with Section 16 (1) EuRAG or an aptitude test has been taken and, if so, to which examination offices
- If applicable, proof that differences in accordance with Section 16a (3) sentence 1 no. 1 and 2 have been fully compensated for
- You have completed training that entitles you to direct access to the profession of European lawyer.
- Submit an application to the Judicial Examination Office
- The Judicial Examination Office will check whether you have acquired all the knowledge and skills required to work as a lawyer in Germany during your training
- If this is the case, your qualification will be recognized
- If there are any differences, you will have to take an aptitude test
- The aptitude test consists of a written and an oral part.
- The written examination consists of two supervised assignments.
- The oral examination consists of a short presentation and an interview.
- The Examination Office will issue a confirmation of successful completion of the aptitude test. A failed aptitude test may be repeated twice.
You can take legal action against the decision of the competent authority within a certain period of time (for example, by lodging an objection). The decision will then be reviewed. Details can be found in the information on legal remedies at the end of your decision. You should first speak to the responsible office before taking legal action against the decision.
