Physicians require an authorization for the medical monitoring of occupationally exposed persons in the field of radiation protection.

Are you a doctor and would like to carry out medical monitoring of occupationally exposed persons in accordance with the Radiation Protection Ordinance? Then you need an authorization. If you can prove that you meet the necessary requirements, you can apply for authorization. In particular, you must

• have a license to practice medicine

and

• specialist knowledge in occupational medicine and
• proof of specialist knowledge in radiation protection for medical monitoring in the event of occupational exposure.

The specialist knowledge in radiation protection must be demonstrated at least every five years by successful participation in a refresher course.

• License to practice medicine
• Occupational medical expertise or the "Course on occupational medical assessment of workplaces for physicians to be authorized"
• Specialist certificate on the required specialist knowledge in radiation protection for authorized physicians

Upon application, the following may be authorized

• is authorized to practice the medical profession (license to practice medicine),
• the occupational medical qualification (occupational medicine, company medicine, company medical qualification) or the "Course on the occupational medical assessment of workplaces for physicians to be authorized" and
• the specialist knowledge in radiation protection for medical supervision in the event of occupational exposure

is proven.

The specialist knowledge consists of

• Basic course in radiation protection for physicians
• Special course for physicians to be authorized and
• at least six months of activity including 25 examinations of occupationally exposed persons under the guidance and responsibility of an authorized physician.

You need an authorization to monitor exposed persons in accordance with radiation protection law. You must apply for this before starting work. You must provide proof of the following:

• License to practice medicine or permission to temporarily practice the medical profession
• the necessary specialist knowledge in radiation protection for medical supervision

You must apply in advance to the Saxony-Anhalt Medical Association for the specialist qualification.

If you meet all the requirements, the competent authority will issue the authorization. The authorization is limited to 5 years.

The authorization is valid nationwide and is limited to five years. The extension must be applied forbefore the expiry date and proof of updated specialist knowledge in radiation protection must be provided.

The specialist knowledge required in radiation protection for medical screening of occupationally exposed persons by authorized physicians must be updated at least every five years by attending a recognized course.
