If you want to practice the profession of pharmacist in Germany without restrictions, you need a state license, the Approbation.
After successfully completing your pharmacy studies, you can apply for a license to practice as a pharmacist. Once you have been granted a license to practice as a pharmacist, you are entitled to practice the pharmacy profession in Germany independently and on your own responsibility.
The license is granted for an unlimited period and is valid for the entire Federal Republic of Germany.
- Proof of identity
- Birth certificate or a current extract from the parents' family register
- If applicable, marriage certificate/registered civil partnership (proof in case of name change)
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form
- An official certificate of good conduct (document type O), which must not have been issued more than one month prior to submission.
- Certificate of passing the pharmaceutical examination
- Declaration as to whether the applicant is the subject of any pending criminal proceedings or investigations by the public prosecutor's office
- Medical certificate, which must not be older than one month, stating that the applicant is not medically unfit to practise the profession
The license to practice as a pharmacist is granted upon application if you:
- have completed the prescribed training and passed the state examination.
- have not been guilty of any conduct that makes you unworthy or unreliable to practise the profession of pharmacist
- are not unfit in health terms to practise the profession,
- have the German language skills required for practicing the profession.
Is based on the respective administrative fee schedule of the federal state or on the fee statutes of the authorities responsible under federal state law.
- You submit the application for licensure including all required documents to the competent authority
- The competent licensing authority checks the completeness of the documents submitted and whether the legal requirements can be adequately demonstrated.
- Missing or insufficient evidence will be requested by the competent licensing authority if necessary.
- The competent licensing authority will check the licensing requirements.
- After a positive result, you will be issued or sent a certificate of licensure against acknowledgement of receipt.
The processing time varies between the competent licensing authorities of the federal states.
