If you want to work in facilities with exposure to ionising radiation or employ other people there, you must apply for a permit.
Radiation protection is about protecting people and the environment from the effects of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation from natural and artificial sources.
If you are a company or sole trader working in a plant or facility or employing people where exposure to ionising radiation may result in an effective dose of more than 1 millisievert in a calendar year, you must apply for a permit. In this case, the persons are considered occupationally exposed persons.
For activities in connection with the operation of third-party X-ray equipment and interfering radiation sources, you can choose between a permit (according to § 25 StrlSchG) and a notification (according to § 26 StrlSchG). This permit is usually valid nationwide.
The licence applies to you if you have a company that, for example, carries out repair or maintenance work in nuclear power plants or a cleaning company that operates in a nuclear medicine facility.
For the permit, you need at least one radiation protection officer who has the required expertise in radiation protection. As a rule, a radiation passport is required for you or for each employee who is to be deployed; exceptions are possible with the approval of the authorities if the persons are only deployed in a third-party plant or facility. The radiation protection officer arranges for medical monitoring of the occupationally exposed persons (Section 77 StrlSchV) .
The approval is limited to a maximum of five years.
- Application for approval of employment in third-party plants and facilities
- copies of the appointment letters of the radiation protection commissioners
- Proofs of the radiation protection commissioners' expert knowledge in radiation protection
- Copy of the radiation protection instructions
- As a rule, police clearance certificate of the applicant and of the radiation protection commissioners
- Delimitation contracts (draft may be sufficient)
- No doubts about the reliability of the applicant, his legal representative or authorized person.
- The number of radiation protection commissioners with the required authority and the required qualification in radiation protection necessary for a safe performance of the activity.
- Instead of a radiation protection commissioner, the applicant or his legal representative may also possess the required qualification in radiation protection.
- The persons otherwise engaged in the activity shall have the necessary knowledge and skills with regard to the possible radiation hazard and the protective measures to be applied.
- The necessary equipment must be available and appropriate measures must be taken to comply with the relevant protective regulations of the Radiation Protection Act and the Radiation Protection Ordinance.
If you would like to apply for a permit to work in other people's plants or facilities, please contact the relevant state authority to find out what the procedure is.
- As a rule, the permit is issued with nationwide validity.
