You can request information on vehicles that are registered with the registration authority. You must give reasons for your request.

As part of a simple vehicle register information request, they receive information about certain stored vehicle and owner data. They must demonstrate that they need this information to assert, secure and enforce or defend against legal claims in connection with participation in road traffic. There may also be a legitimate interest in bringing a private action for traffic violations. If necessary, evidence must be provided for this.

In special cases, you will receive information on further vehicle and owner data as part of an extended vehicle register information request. Special reasons for this must be substantiated with evidence.

A loss event for which you require vehicle registration information can occur through active or passive participation in road traffic (perpetrator, tortfeasor, victim, injured party, etc.). An indirect connection with participation in road traffic is sufficient. However, the participation must have a connection to the road traffic law event. This is particularly true if the vehicle is being driven. However, participation in road traffic can also occur if the vehicle is parked. The use of the motor vehicle does not necessarily have to take place on public roads. It is sufficient if the vehicle is parked in a private parking lot or garage. There it can cause damage or be damaged itself. The rights of others may also be infringed by the use of the vehicle (e.g. ownership, possession of the property).

• The vehicle registration number or the vehicle identification number (VIN) must be provided as part of the simple vehicle register information.
• In particularly justified cases, vehicle data or the personal details of the vehicle owner may be provided as part of the extended vehicle register information.

You request the vehicle registration information from the registration authority responsible for the vehicle in question:

• You explain the reasons for the request.
• You explain the facts that may give rise to the requirements for the provision of information.
• In the case of information due to a loss event (date and, if applicable, time of the event) so that in the event of a change of owner in the meantime, it is clear which vehicle owner is to be claimed against.
• The information will be sent to you once the inspection has been completed.
