The International Driving Licence is not required within the European Union (EU) and the signatory states to the Agreement on the European Economic Area (Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein). However, to drive a rental car abroad, it can be helpful to have an International Driving Licence. In certain countries, mostly outside Europe, an International Driving Licence is required in addition to the national one.
The driving licence authorities are obliged to notify the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) of the issue of an International Driving Licence for storage in the Central Driving Licence Register. A driving licence number, as issued when a card driving licence is issued, is required for storage. If you still hold a paper driving licence, this means that you must have your existing driving licence converted to the card driving licence before an International Driving Permit is issued.
The International Driving Licence is issued for a maximum of one year (driving licences according to Annex 8 c to the Driving Licence Ordinance) or three years (driving licences according to Annex 8 d to the Driving Licence Ordinance), but not longer than the duration of the national driving licence. An expired International Driving Permit cannot be renewed.
