- § 6a Bundeskindergeldgesetz (BKGG) – Kinderzuschlag
Application for supplementary child allowance in accordance with § 6a of the Federal Child Benefit Act (BKGG)
If your income is sufficient to cover your own living expenses but not those of your children, you can apply for a child supplement in addition to child benefit.
Depending on your income and assets, from 1 January 2025 you will receive a monthly amount of up to EUR 297.00 for each child for whom you are entitled to child benefit. This can prevent your family from having to rely on supplementary income support just because of the children.
The following points are used to calculate your income:
- Your child's income, for example maintenance, maintenance advance or half-orphan's pension, at 45 per cent,
- 45 per cent of your income from employment and self-employment that exceeds your own needs,
- Income replacement benefits, for example unemployment benefit or sickness benefit,
- Parental or state child-raising allowance,
- Pensions from social insurance,
- Capital and interest income,
- Income from letting and leasing,
- Maintenance payments (spousal maintenance).
The supplement is possible as long as your child is younger than 25 and still lives in your household. The child supplement is granted for six months at a time, after which you must submit a new application.
- Application form (Forms & Online Services), including the applicant/partner annex and the child annex
- Proof of income, housing costs and assets
- if applicable, further documents and evidence
For more information on the documents to be submitted, please refer to the application form.
- the children are under 25, unmarried and live in your household
- You receive child benefit or a comparable benefit (e.g. child allowance from statutory accident insurance, child allowance from pension insurance, benefits from an intergovernmental or supranational organisation such as the European Parliament)
- Your income is within the statutory minimum and maximum limits:
- as joint parents: at least EUR 900.00
- as a single parent: at least EUR 600.00
- The maximum amount depends on the age and marital status of the parents.
- Since 1 January 2020, you can also receive the child supplement if your earned income, child supplement and housing benefit are not more than EUR 100.00 per month below the Citizen's Allowance entitlement.
You do not receive a child supplement:
- Parents with children who only receive citizen's allowance, social benefit or social assistance
- Persons to whom guardianship of the child has been transferred, for example grandparents with whom the child lives
