Subsidy to compensate for the costs of living away from home during training
If you do not live at home with your parents during vocational training or vocational preparation, you can apply for a vocational training allowance from the Federal Employment Agency.
The aim of the vocational training allowance is to compensate for the economic difficulties you are experiencing as a result of living away from home during training, so that nothing stands in the way of an appropriate vocational qualification.
The vocational training allowance is paid as a grant and therefore does not have to be repaid.

Under certain circumstances, the Employment Agency may request further documents if it deems it necessary for the assessment of eligibility.

- Participants in a pre-vocational training measure
Personal requirements
- You do not live with your parents during your training because the training company is too far away from your parents' home.
- If you do not live with your parents, but in their vicinity, you can also receive the vocational training allowance if you are
- are 18 years of age or older
- are or were married or in a civil partnership,
- live with at least one child
- cannot be relegated to the home of your parents or one of your parents for serious social reasons.
- They are unable to raise the necessary funds to cover the
- Living costs,
- Travel costs to the training centre/accommodation/vocational school,
- Family travel home,
- Work clothes and
- Childcare costs.
Different regulations apply to people with disabilities. They can also receive funding if they
- Undertake vocational training within the framework of the Vocational Training Act (Berufsbildungsgesetz) or the Handicrafts Code (Handwerksordnung) in deviation from the training regulations for state-recognised training occupations or in special forms for disabled persons,
- extend the training beyond the scheduled end of the training course
- repeat the training in whole or in part if the nature or severity of the disability so requires or if permanent participation in working life would otherwise not be possible,
- live in the household of your parents or one of your parents.
Note: Even if you do not have German citizenship, you are generally entitled to vocational training assistance, unless
- You have a residence permit under the Asylum Act.
- You are considered "tolerated" and have been staying in Germany for less than 15 months without interruption on a permitted, approved or tolerated basis.
Training requirements
Vocational training:
- first vocational training
- A second vocational training course can be funded if it is to be expected that vocational integration cannot be achieved in the long term by other means and that vocational integration will be achieved through the second vocational training course.
- recognised vocational training under the Vocational Training Act, the Crafts Code or the Seamen's Act
- It can be carried out in-company, out-of-company or in accordance with the Geriatric Care Act.
- Conclusion of a vocational training contract and registration with the competent chamber
Note: After a training relationship has been terminated prematurely (training discontinuation), funding may be provided again if there was a justified reason for the termination.
Vocational preparation training measure:
- the "Berufsvorbereitende Bildungsmaßnahme" (BVB) is carried out on behalf of the Employment Agency
Aid for school-based vocational preparation measures cannot be granted.
You apply for the vocational training allowance in writing using the prescribed form. You can obtain the application form from your competent employment agency (competent office), or you can use the online procedure.
- Call up the online service and you will be guided step by step through the application process. Alternatively, you can fill out the application form and submit it with the other documents to the competent office.
- The Employment Agency will check your entitlement. Your own income and the income of your parents or spouse are taken into account. In addition, allowances and additional needs are taken into account.
- Once the examination is complete, you will receive a decision stating the amount of your vocational training allowance.
Application: before the start of the measure
Note: In the case of a subsequent application, a grant can be awarded from the month of application at the earliest.
Payment period:
- for vocational training: 18 months
- for other training measures: 1 year
After the payment period has expired, you must reapply for the benefits.
