An official electoral roll is kept in each electoral district. Persons entitled to vote whose main residence is registered in an electoral district on a certain cut-off date (42nd day before the election) are entered in the register ex officio and receive an election notification card no later than three weeks before election day.
If you wish to be entered on the electoral roll of a city or municipality in which you are not listed (for example, because you have recently moved), you can apply for this until the 21st day before the election. In case of local elections, you can apply until the 16th day before the election at the latest.
Note: For state elections in Saxony, you are only eligible to vote if you have been living in the Free State for at least 3 months on election day or if you habitually stay here without having another place of residence. To vote in municipal elections (municipal council, city district advisory council, mayoral, district council or county council elections), you must have been a resident in the respective municipality, city district, district or county for at least 3 months on election day.
A copy of the registration confirmation from the municipal administration is usually sufficient as proof.
- The municipal administration will not make an entry in the electoral roll for you ex officio.
- They assume that you are entitled to vote.
Your written application should include the following information:
- Your first and last name
- Your date of birth
- Your residental address
- Your signature
- and the wording "Antrag auf Eintragung in das Wählerverzeichnis" (application for entry in the electoral roll).
If Germans living outside the Federal Republic wish to apply for entry on the electoral roll for the federal government (Bundestag) or European elections, they have to use special forms. These are available on the website of the Federal Election Commissioner (Bundeswahlleiter).
If entry is possible, you will immediately receive an election notification. If you are not eligible to vote, you will also be notified immediately.
- Application deadline: no later than the 21st day before the election (local elections: no later than the 16th day before the election).
