In Saxony, dental training includes a dental examination before the examination board of the Saxony State Directorate for the Dental Examination (ZÄP) at the universities of Leipzig and Dresden.
Proof of passing the examination is a prerequisite for a licence to practise as a dentist.
Dental training comprises a ten-semester course of study in dentistry (standard period of study including examination period: ten semesters and six months) at an academic university, training in first aid, one month's nursing service, a four-week clinical traineeship and the dental examination. The dental examination consists of
- the first section of the dental examination (Z1),
- the second section of the dental examination (Z2) and
- the third section of the dental examination (Z3).
They apply for authorisation for each section of the dental examination individually. The examinations are taken before a state examination commission (examination board). The Saxon State Examination Office for Academic Health Professions appoints chairpersons, members and their deputies. The State Examination Office can also send representatives to the examinations.
- Officially certified copy of the identity card / identity document (original or officially certified copy)
- In the event of a name change: marriage certificate / civil partnership certificate or extract from the civil status register (original or officially certified copy)
- the university entrance qualification (original or officially certified copy)
- Certificates of regular and successful participation in the courses

You apply for admission to the dental examination in writing to the relevant office. Use the form prescribed for the respective examination.
- You can obtain the required forms online here via Amt24 (-> Forms and other offers) or directly from the relevant office.
- Complete the application and submit it to the relevant office with the required documents and evidence.
- After the examination, you will receive written notification of admission to the examination.
