At the Abendgymnasium, adults have the opportunity to take the Abitur (School leaving examination). Classes are held while students are working.

The Abendgymnasium usually begins with the one-year introductory phase (two school semesters). This is followed by the two-year course phase with grades 11 and 12 (four course semesters).

Under certain circumstances, you can skip the introductory phase, but you may also have to complete a one-year preliminary course (two school semesters). The school period thus lasts between two and four years.

As a rule, an informal application is sufficient, but it is better to find out about the formalities of applying in advance from the school management.

You must submit the following documents with your application for admission:

• a complete curriculum vitae in tabular form with a photograph
• Birth certificate
• certified copy of the last school leaving certificate (the Abendgymnasium may require the submission of further school certificates)
• Certificate of completed vocational training (qualification) or of the required professional activity (as a certified copy or the original)
• a declaration as to whether and, if so, where you have already taken part in an Abitur examination and that you have not yet attained the general higher education entrance qualification
• Confirmation of the pursuit of a professional activity or an equivalent activity

You have completed vocational training or have been employed for at least two years. Vocational training counts towards the duration of employment.

Exceptions

• The two years of professional experience is equal to the following activities:
  • Parental leave, taking care of a minor child or a person in need of care
  • proven unemployment (certificate from the employment agency required)
  • Completion of federal voluntary service, military service, civilian service or voluntary social or ecological year
  • You are currently working or can prove your unemployment with a certificate from the Employment Agency. In the latter case, you can also consider attending the college.
  • You do not have the general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) and have not yet taken two unsuccessful examinations to obtain the general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur).
• If you have a Realschulabschluss (secondary school certificate) or comparable qualification and are at least 19 years old at the beginning of the school year, you start with the introductory phase. If you have a lower secondary school leaving certificate and are at least 18 years old, you start with the preliminary course.

Skipping the Preliminary Course and the Introductory Phase

• You can skip the Preliminary Course and the Introductory Phase if your qualifications indicate that you will be able to cope with the requirements of the Course Phase (Years 11 and 12), in particular if you
  • have the Fachhochschulreife (entrance qualification for studies at universities of applied sciences)
  • have a subject-related higher education entrance qualification, or
  • have left the Gymnasium after grade 11.

Change of school to another Abendgymnasium

• If you have successfully completed the preliminary course, you can continue with the introductory phase at another Abendgymnasium. The same applies when changing schools between the introductory phase and the course phase.
• During the course phase, you can only change to another evening grammar school if you can continue the courses to be taken from year 11 at the new evening grammar school.
• During the school year, a change is only permitted for good cause, for example, if you change your place of residence.

In order to attend an Abendgymnasium, you must register with the school beforehand.

• The school management decides on admission to the school.
• You will be informed of the decision in writing.

Before the application deadline, the evening grammar schools hold information events on the educational pathway at the respective school and on the admission requirements.
