Lost property is accepted by the lost property office of your city or district.

Finders' rights

Both claims for a finder's reward and claims for reimbursement of expenses are matters of civil law between the finder and the person entitled to receive the lost property. The lost property office can only advise the parties, but has no decision-making power.

For finds in public authorities and means of transport (so-called "official finds" or "authority finds"), the finder's rights apply only to a limited extent.

Please note: If you lose items on Deutsche Bahn premises, in trains or buildings, please contact Deutsche Bahn AG directly, as these lost property items will not be forwarded.

The lost property report (available from the lost property office of your city or district) must contain at least the place and time of the find and a description of the found object that is as precise as possible. Furthermore, the finder must provide his or her contact details and a declaration of his or her finder's rights (finder's reward, reimbursement of expenses and acquisition of property).

If you find a valuable object, you can hand it in at the lost property office in your city or district.

At the lost property office, you fill out a lost property report and possibly state a finder's reward or reimbursement of expenses. You also have the option of stating that you have acquired ownership. This occurs if the lost property is not collected within the deadline.

The report of the find must be made immediately, i.e. without culpable delay. Delivery to the lost property authorities should take place promptly, at the latest ten working days after the find.

Lost property is kept for six months. Food and luxury foodstuffs, medicines and chemicals are disposed of immediately.
