Every year, the Free State of Saxony, together with the Frauenkirche Dresden Foundation and Commerzbank's Dresden Cultural Foundation, honours associations, initiatives, institutions or individuals whose outstanding commitment brings democracy to life, helps other people and is committed to the environment, customs, traditions and a living culture of remembrance.
The prizes are awarded in five categories:
- Strengthening togetherness - shaping the country (democracy)
- Helping people - creating a sense of community (people)
- Cultivating traditions - understanding history (homeland)
- Preserving creation - protecting nature (environment)
- Think globally - act locally (World)
The award winners are selected by an independent jury. The Saxon districts and independent cities (Chemnitz, Dresden and Leipzig) are eligible for nomination. The prize, which is endowed with EUR 5,000, is awarded annually.
- Apart from the nomination forms, no other documents are required for the nominations by the district councillors and mayors.
- In the third phase, the nominees are asked for a project description, which is a prerequisite for the jury's selection process.
Who can be nominated for the Citizens' Award?
Up to five nominations are possible for each category per administrative district or independent city. The following will be considered
- Initiatives
- Associations
- Institutions
- Individuals
What achievements are honoured?
Through their voluntary work, the nominees help to bring democracy to life. They help other people and are committed to the environment, customs and traditions as well as a lively culture of remembrance. They should also be committed to the free democratic basic order.
- In the first phase, the mayors of the towns and municipalities and representatives of the churches have the opportunity to propose projects to their district administrator that are particularly worthy of an award.
- In the second phase, the district councillors nominate projects, associations, initiatives, institutions or individuals. They can add their own suggestions. In Dresden, Leipzig and Chemnitz, the Lord Mayor nominates the candidates directly.
- For each category, up to five nominations can be submitted per district and independent city for the respective award year. This is done in the form of nomination forms sent by post or email to the Saxon State Chancellery.
- In the third phase, the nominees are asked to submit their own project description, which serves as the basis for the jury's decision.
- After the closing date, the jury evaluates the project descriptions and selects the winners.
