Benefits for education and participation in accordance with § 34 SGB XII and § 6b BKGG

The education and participation package is intended to enable children and young people from families with low incomes or on social benefits to take advantage of opportunities at school and in their leisure time on an equal footing.

All children should be able to play sports and music in their free time, receive appropriate help with learning and the necessary school supplies, receive school meals and take part in school excursions. Your children can also receive targeted support through learning support beyond what is offered at school.

School trips and school excursions lasting several days

Support is provided for expenses for:

• one-day excursions by the school/day care centre
• school trips lasting several days at the school/day care centre

Provision of personal school supplies

There is a grant for learning materials (e.g. for the purchase of a school bag, sports equipment or writing, arithmetic and drawing materials). This is paid in two amounts:

• February 2022 - EUR 52.00
• August 2022 - EUR 104.00

The allowance increases annually by the same percentage as the standard need.

Note: You must apply for these benefits if you receive child supplement or housing benefit.

School transport costs

The costs of transport to the nearest school offering the chosen course of education are covered if the costs are not already covered by other sources.

Learning support

The actual costs for a necessary extracurricular learning support if the need for this is confirmed by the school and there are no comparable school offers.

Note: Learning support must be applied for in advance.

Lunchtime meals

The expenses for a joint lunch at school and in the day-care centre are covered.

Participation in social and cultural life

This is a lump sum of EUR 15.00 per month for membership fees in sports clubs, music schools and other leisure activities.

If no application form (Antrag auf Gewährung von Leistungen zur Bildung und Teilhabe) is available in Amt24, you can obtain it on request from the office responsible for you.

To prove the necessary costs for participation in excursions, school trips or for learning support, you will also need a confirmation from the school or day-care centre.

The competent office will inform you of any additional documents and evidence that may be required.

Eligible to apply

Recipients of:

• Social assistance
• Housing benefit
• Child supplement

If you are eligible to apply and meet the other legal requirements, you have a legal claim to the benefits of the education package.

Other conditions

For the assumption of transport costs:

• The child travels to the nearest school with the chosen course of education. The nearest school of the chosen course of education is also deemed to be a school chosen on the basis of its profile, insofar as this profile results in a special content-related or organisational design of the lessons; these are in particular schools with a scientific, artistic, sporting or linguistic profile as well as bilingual schools and schools with an all-day orientation.
• This applies if the costs are not covered elsewhere, for example by a subsidy from the municipality.

For the assumption of costs for learning support:

• The school confirms the necessity.
• There are no comparable school offers.
• The learning support must be appropriate and suitable in order to achieve the essential learning goals of the chosen course of education as defined by school law. It does not matter if the pupil is in danger of being promoted.

You will receive benefits from the education and participation package if you are entitled to benefits and have proven your need. You must submit a written application for learning support benefits.

Child supplement and housing benefit

You must submit a written application for all benefits from the education and participation package.

How and where can you apply?

• If possible, find out in advance from the competent office how to apply for benefits from the education package most easily. The staff will also help you with the application if you wish.
• The relevant office will send you the necessary forms; some forms can also be downloaded from Amt24.
• Fill in the forms, sign the application and collect the necessary supporting documents.
• Send the complete application documents by post to the competent office or hand them in personally.
• You will receive written notification as to whether your child can take advantage of the programme and, if so, which programme.

How can your children take advantage of the offers?

As a rule, you will receive support from the education package in the form of goods, money or services, for example as a voucher. The allowance for school supplies is paid directly to you.
