The Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) supports the installation of combined heat and power (CHP) plants up to 20 kW upon application with a one-time investment grant (mini CHP grant).
The central aim of this subsidy is to significantly increase the use of highly efficient CHP plants in this output range and thus contribute to achieving the national climate protection targets.
Tip: Grid operators pay an electricity tariff for state-approved CHP plants, regardless of their output. For plants up to 50 kW, the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control introduced a simplified approval procedure.
Conditions
Type of funding
Proportionate funding (non-repayable grant)
Amount
- Basic subsidy: graded according to the output of the system up to EUR 3,500
- Bonus subsidy for heat efficiency: 25% of the basic subsidy
- Bonus subsidy for electricity efficiency: 60 % of the basic subsidy
The bonus subsidies can be combined with each other, but they can only be claimed in addition to the basic subsidy for new CHP plants.
Notes:
- Combination with other subsidies is possible.
- There is no legal entitlement to this funding.

- Explanations
You will find a list of all required documents in the application form ("Checklist").
- The system is on the "List of eligible mini-CHP systems" (on BAFA's programme page).
- existing maintenance contract
- Heat storage tank with at least 60 litres of water / 1 kW thermal with maximum storage volume of 1,600 litres
- Electricity meter for measuring the CHP electricity generated
- for systems of 10 kilowatts or more: information and communication technology that receives signals from the electricity market and reacts to them
The installation must not be located in an area with a connection and use requirement for district heating.
Apply for funding in writing using the form provided online.
- You can obtain the application form and other forms online via Amt24 or directly from the BAFA programme page.
