Airbags and belt tensioners contain pyrotechnic sets and igniters. They are therefore subject to the German Explosives Act (SprengG). If handled improperly, these components pose a considerable risk of serious injury or even death. The installation and removal of airbag modules and belt tensioners may only be carried out by qualified, trained personnel.
If you handle airbag or belt tensioner units of category P1 as part of a commercial activity, but without igniting them (e.g. when installing and removing them in vehicle workshops), you do not require an explosives licence.
If you, as an employer, have airbag or belt tensioner units of category P1 used in your company for the first time, you must report this in writing.
