Studying with a vocational qualification (without a school-leaving certificate):

If you meet certain requirements, you can gain access to certain degree programs without a school-leaving certificate.

1. General university entrance qualification:

Holders of the following qualifications receive a general university entrance qualification:

1. 1. Master craftsman in accordance with §§ 45, 51 a, 122 of the Crafts Code (HwO),
   2. Advanced training qualifications for which examination regulations exist in accordance with §§ 53, 54 of the Vocational Training Act or §§ 42, 42 a of the Crafts Code

(example: industrial foreman, banking specialist, insurance specialist),

1. 1. advanced training qualifications for professions in the healthcare sector

(example: specialist nursing in intensive care and anesthesia),

1. 1. Advanced training qualifications for professions in the field of social care and social pedagogy

(Example: State-recognized curative education nurse),

1. 1. Technical college qualifications

(example: state-certified technician, state-recognized educator).

In the cases of 2), 3) and 4), however, applicants will only receive this general higher education entrance qualification if they can prove that the courses leading to the examinations comprised at least 400 hours of instruction.

1. Subject-specific university entrance qualification

Under certain conditions, the subject-specific higher education entrance qualification can be issued without an Abitur via a higher education admission assessment.

There are four main requirements:

1. 1. Proof of a final examination in a relevant recognized training occupation with a regular training period of at least two years,
   2. At least three years of full-time employment in the learned profession or a related profession. Scholarship holders of the federal government's advancement scholarship program and vocationally qualified persons who have already proven their special ability by demonstrating particularly good grades in the final vocational examination or who have participated particularly successfully in a professional performance competition only need to provide evidence of two years of professional activity.
   3. The training must have been extended and deepened by further vocational training in the relevant field, and
   4. The German language skills required for the course must be available or proven.

The university admission assessment is formally an examination, but in fact it is merely an assessment interview, i.e. not an examination in the traditional sense. A decision is only made on the basis of the files and the impression of the examination committee as to the applicant's suitability for the subject and for studying.

At the artistic universities (Hochschule für Musik Saar and Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar), different admission requirements apply for prospective students without a school-leaving certificate.

You can seek advice from your university of choice as to which path is right for you. This depends on your desired course of study, your school-leaving certificate and your professional qualifications.

No additional costs

You must clarify with the university of your choice whether you have a professional qualification.

Applicants for a study place must submit to the university the relevant degree certificate and, if necessary, a certificate from the body conducting the examination confirming the duration of the course that prepared them for the examination. In degree programs with restricted admission, admission is based on the allocation procedure of the Foundation for University Admissions.

You must specify the course for which you wish to acquire the qualification. You will be informed by the administration department of the respective university as to which type of university admission is suitable for you and how the further procedure will proceed.

Your request will be processed as quickly as possible. In exceptional cases, for example if other authorities need to be involved, processing may take up to four weeks.
