With a birth certificate, you can prove the birth of a person, their first and last names and the details of their parents. You can have a birth certificate issued on the basis of an existing birth register. If the place of birth is outside of the Federal Republic of Germany, the birth may be registered at Standesamt I in Berlin.

To apply for a birth certificate, you will need

• Your identity card or passport

• if you are applying through a representative:
  • written power of attorney from the authorized person,
  • their identity card or passport
  • and the identity card or passport of the representative

• certain persons must also provide credible evidence of a legal or legitimate interest.

There is an entry in a German birth register on the basis of which you can apply for a birth certificate to be issued.

Civil status certificates contain personal data, so their issue is subject to data protection restrictions.

• Authorized applicants (minimum age: 16 years):

• the person to whom the entry relates

and their

• Spouse or spouse,
• civil partners (within the meaning of the Civil Partnership Act),
• ancestors and descendants (such as parents or grandparents as well as children and grandchildren),
• Siblings, if they can credibly demonstrate a legitimate interest.
