If you want to hunt with birds of prey, you need a valid falconry license from the relevant hunting authority.

Issuing, reissuing and re-issuing

The falconry hunting license allows you to hunt with birds of prey. In order to obtain this hunting license, you must pass a falconry examination in addition to the hunting examination, which tests your knowledge of keeping, caring for and removing birds of prey as well as protecting birds of prey. The falconry license offers a unique opportunity to experience and preserve traditional hunting practices. Make sure that you present all the necessary certificates and evidence to the relevant hunting authority.

If your falconry license has expired or needs to be reapplied for due to a change, complete the reissue process with the relevant hunting authority. You will need to provide proof of your falconry license and the required hunting license again, along with valid hunting liability insurance documents. Make sure that all personal information is up to date and that all requirements meet the legal standards. After checking the documents submitted, the falconry license will be reissued if all conditions are met.

Re-issuance of the falconry license may be required if the hunting license was previously revoked or has expired. To apply for reissuance, you must provide proof of all required examinations and qualifications, including the falconry and hunting examinations. Documents relating to hunting liability insurance and personal reliability are also required. If you previously had any legal concerns, you must resolve these and provide the hunting authority with appropriate evidence. After a complete examination by the hunting authority, the falconry license will be reissued if all requirements are met.

Daily and annual falconry license

The falconry hunting license is limited in time and can be applied for for daily or annual periods, depending on individual hunting requirements and residence regulations. The falconry license is valid for 14 consecutive days and can be renewed twice during the hunting year.

Amendment

Changes to the falconry license may become necessary if the holder's personal information changes, such as name or address, or if legal requirements are amended. Such changes must be applied for at the competent hunting authority. Proof of the new situation and the relevant documents are essential in order to make the changes legally effective. In some cases, additional training or proof of valid hunting liability insurance may also be required.

Revocation/withdrawal

A falconry hunting license may be revoked or withdrawn if the holder no longer meets the legal requirements, for example if they are not reliable or have insufficient insurance cover. Such measures are taken by the competent hunting authority if facts become known which justify the unreliability or danger of hunting. In some cases, a suspension period may also be set for the reissue of the falconry license in order to eliminate safety-related concerns.

Entry of a hunting area in the falconry license

A hunting area is entered in the falconry hunting license to ensure that the authorized area for hunting is correct and legally secured. The holder must declare the entire hunting area on which he or she is authorized to hunt to the competent hunting authority. The exact process of registration includes the submission of proof of tenancy and possibly the consent of other persons authorized to hunt. Registration provides a clear legal basis for hunting and prevents any legal disputes.

Entry of a hunting area in the hunting license

• Application for registration of the hunting area in the falconry hunting license

• You are at least 18 years old.
• You have successfully passed the written, oral and practical parts of the hunting examination.
• You have successfully passed the additional falconry examination.
• You have valid hunting liability insurance.
• You fulfill all legal requirements, including reliability.
• You ensure that the transportation of your hunting weapons complies with legal requirements.
• You meet the requirements for the lawful carrying of hunting weapons in Germany.

Change

• An update of your personal information is required.
• You submit all necessary documents to document the changes.

Revocation/withdrawal

Your falconry hunting license will be revoked if:

• Your hunting liability insurance is no longer valid.
• There is a legal violation that calls your reliability into question.
• Your hunting license information is not correct or up to date.

Your falconry hunting license is revoked if:

• There are serious violations of hunting regulations.
• There are officially confirmed concerns about your reliability.
• Misconduct is detected in the course of hunting.

Entry of a hunting area in the falconry hunting license

• You have a valid falconry hunting license.
• You have a current hunting lease that documents the use of the intended hunting area.
• You meet all legal requirements for entering the hunting area in your hunting license.
• You submit the required proof of use of the hunting area to the competent hunting authority.

• You submit all the required documents, including your lease agreement - and a copy of your falconry hunting license if you wish to reissue or renew it
• You prepare and submit your hunting test results including falconry test results.
• Your application will be reviewed by the hunting authority and your documents and legal requirements will be carefully checked. If documents are missing or incomplete, the authority will request that they be submitted subsequently.
• Your hunting area will be entered in your falconry hunting license by the competent hunting authority
• You will receive a notice confirming your authorization to hunt by falconry.
• If there are legal concerns, your application will not be approved.

Amendment

• You submit your application online or by post to the competent hunting authority.
• You submit all the necessary documents, including your current falconry hunting license and proof of the planned change.
• You prepare your hunting test results including falconry test results and submit them.
• Your change application will be reviewed by the hunting authority and the documents submitted will be carefully checked. If the documents are incomplete or incorrect, you will receive a request for correction.
• Your hunting area will be entered in your falconry hunting license by the competent hunting authority
• The changes will be entered after a successful check.
• If there are legal concerns, the changes will be refused.

Revocation/withdrawal

• The competent hunting authority continuously checks whether all conditions for holding a falconry license are met.
• If violations of legal regulations or a lack of reliability are found, a procedure is initiated to review the falconry hunting license.
• You will receive official notification of the reason and the legal grounds for the revocation or withdrawal.
• You will be given the opportunity to comment on the allegations or submit missing documents within a certain period of time.
• If there are sufficient grounds, your falconry license will be revoked or withdrawn and you will receive a legally binding decision.

Entry of a hunting area in the falconry hunting license

• You submit an application to the competent hunting authority to register the hunting area in the falconry hunting license.
• You submit all the necessary documents, including the hunting lease and any declarations of consent from other parties involved.
• The hunting authority checks the legal validity and completeness of the documents submitted.
• If the check is successful, the hunting area will be officially entered in your falconry hunting license.
• You will receive a notification confirming the registration.
• If there are any legal concerns or missing documents, the registration will be rejected and you will be notified accordingly.

You will only receive the falconry license for the period for which you have taken out the insurance. The insurance company can also send the proof directly to the competent authority electronically.

The falconry hunting license alone does not entitle you to actually hunt. In Germany, the right to hunt belongs to landowners, who (if they own sufficient land and hold a valid hunting license) may exercise it on their own land or must join local hunting associations of landowners, who then usually lease the right to hunt to hunters.

The falconry hunting license must be carried when hunting with falconry

The falconry hunting license is valid throughout Germany.

The hunting levy is earmarked for:

• Measures for the conservation and improvement of wildlife habitats
• wildlife biology research projects, studies of game habitats (biotopes) and game management
• Measures and facilities for the further training of hunters
• Measures to improve animal welfare in hunting, in particular the promotion of tracking with dogs and the training of dogs for hunting
• Measures for the prevention and control of diseases of game that are transmissible to humans or animals kept in the care of humans

Special features

Before issuing a falconry license for the first time, the competent hunting authority must obtain an extract from the Federal Central Register, which can take up to 4 weeks. Therefore, please contact your hunting authority during the current or after passing the hunting examination including the falconry examination
