The first law exam concludes your law studies at Saarland University.
It is divided into 2 examinations:
- The state compulsory subject examination
- The university specialization examination
The overall grade of the first legal examination is made up of 70% of the grade of the state compulsory examination and 30% of the grade of the university specialization examination. You can decide the order of the two examinations yourself.
The first legal examination is the basis for admission to the preparatory legal service and therefore also a prerequisite for taking the second state legal examination.
- Application for admission to the examination
- Proof of the admission requirements, in particular
- Certificate from the Legal Examination Office of Saarland University confirming that you have completed your law studies in accordance with the regulations
- a certificate of successful participation in one exercise each in civil law, criminal law and public law
- Certificate(s) of completion of the practical study periods
- University entrance certificate
- Birth certificate or certificate of descent showing proof of name or certificate of marriage or civil partnership with proof of name
- curriculum vitae
- Certificates of enrolment from Saarland University for the two semesters preceding the examination
- Proper study of law
- Enrolment in the "Law" course at Saarland University in the two semesters immediately preceding the examination
- Successful participation in the exercises for advanced students in civil law, criminal law and public law
- Participation in practical study periods of at least three months
- The application for admission can be submitted in writing or electronically to the State Examination Office for Lawyers.
- Once the admission requirements have been checked, you will receive an invitation to the examination papers by post with further information on the examination procedure.
Please note: Students are usually summoned to the examination papers about three weeks before the first exam.
You must submit your application for admission by January 15 of the same year for the registration deadline of January 15 of the same year (preparation of the supervisory papers in February).
For the registration deadline of July 15 of a given year (preparation of the examination papers in August), you must submit the application for admission by July 15 of the same year.
Admission is only possible for the next possible examination date.

- Appeal: In accordance with § 18a JAG, you can lodge an appeal against the decision on the result of the compulsory state examination.
- Legal action before the administrative court: You have the option of taking legal action before the Saarland Administrative Court.

The state compulsory subject examination is conducted by the State Examination Office for Lawyers.
The university specialization examination is conducted by the Law Examination Office at Saarland University.
