In Saarland, the use of foreign degrees and titles is not subject to approval in accordance with §68 of the Saarland Higher Education Act.
Do you have an academic degree from a foreign university that you would like to use in Germany? If this was duly awarded by a university recognized under the law of the country of origin, you can use it without permission under the conditions set out in § 68 of the Saarland Higher Education Act. The name of the awarding institution must be stated. This does not apply to university degrees from member states of the European Union, which can be used in the original form without a designation of origin. The awarded form of the degree may be transferred to the Latin script in the case of foreign fonts; furthermore, the abbreviation approved or proven to be generally used in the country of origin may be used and a literal translation may be added in brackets. The regulations also apply to state and ecclesiastical degrees. A conversion to a German degree does not take place except in favor of those entitled under the Federal Expellees Act. A foreign honorary degree conferred by a university or other institution entitled to confer the degree under the law of the country of origin may be used in the form in which it was conferred in accordance with the legal provisions applicable to the conferral, stating the conferring institution. A foreign honorary degree may not be used if the conferring institution has no right to confer the corresponding degree.
An application is not necessary, except in the case of conversion to a German degree for the benefit of those entitled under the Federal Expellees Act.
- Foreign academic degrees and titles may be used in Saarland on the basis of the statutory general authorization in Section 68 of the Saarland Higher Education Act, if they have been duly awarded by a university recognized under the law of the country of origin. This means that no application concerning the use of foreign academic degrees and titles is required; no approval procedure is carried out and no authorization to use them is granted. The Science Department of the Ministry of Finance and Science will provide information on the legal situation regarding the use of foreign university degrees, university titles and university job titles on request.
- The regulations also apply to state and ecclesiastical degrees.
