Work sites that affect road traffic (construction sites) must be secured.

Work sites that have an impact on road traffic (e.g. excavations in the road, road construction, work in the side area, erection of scaffolding) must be secured.

Before starting work, the contractor must obtain instructions from the competent authority on how the work site is to be cordoned off and marked and how traffic is to be restricted, regulated and routed.

Which traffic measures are required to make the work site safe must always be checked on a case-by-case basis. The contractor and the road traffic authority can refer to the guidelines for traffic safety at road works (RSA).

• The contractor must already check which traffic safety measures are necessary and appropriate during the planning phase of the work site based on the local conditions.
• Following this, a written application must be submitted to the traffic authority for the traffic safety measures to be ordered.
• The competent authority examines the application and the documents submitted and consults the authorities to be involved (including the police and road construction authorities).
• If necessary, a site inspection is carried out with all parties involved in order to coordinate the necessary measures on site. The necessary measures are then ordered to be carried out by the contractor.
