Pupils with special educational needs are those who, for certain reasons, can only take part in school lessons with special help.

Pupils have special educational needs if, due to a disability, their development or a chronic illness, they can only participate in lessons at an elementary school, a secondary general school or a vocational school with special help and other support is not sufficient.

In Schleswig-Holstein, special educational support is provided in one or more areas of support depending on the type of impairment:

• Learning,
• language,
• Emotional and social development,
• Mental development,
• Physical development,
• hearing
• Vision,
• autism,
• Teaching sick pupils.

If required, support is provided by special education teachers from around 100 support centers from all general schools, all age groups and all areas of support. In the areas of language, hearing and vision, support is also provided in the pre-school sector.

If the pupil is unable to receive sufficient support even with this assistance, he or she is transferred to the support center to receive temporary or longer-term support.
