If your child is to attend a grammar school after completing elementary school, you must register your child at this grammar school.
When your child is about to finish elementary school, you as parents have to decide which secondary school your child should attend.
Secondary schools are attended from Year 5 and follow on directly from elementary school (after Year 4). You have the option of sending your child to a community school or a grammar school.
In principle, a grammar school is attended from Year 5 to Year 12/13. On completion of year 9, your child will receive the first general school-leaving certificate (ESA). The intermediate school leaving certificate (MSA) is obtained on completion of year 10.
Depending on the grammar school, the school is completed in 8 or 9 years, also known as G8 or G9. This means that the length of school attendance varies between 12 or 13 years. The important thing is that both the learning content and the school leaving certificate are the same.
On completion of the Gymnasium after year 12 or 13, your child will receive the general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur). This qualification entitles your child to study at a university.
Most grammar schools offer the Abitur in 13 years.
