Health assistance includes preventive services, assistance in the event of illness, assistance with family planning or assistance with sterilization.
Health assistance includes
- Preventive health assistance (preventive services),
- Assistance in the event of illness (medical treatment, alleviation of symptoms),
- Assistance with family planning during pregnancy and maternity as well as assistance with sterilization.
The Act on the Modernization of Statutory Health Insurance (GKV-Modernisierungsgesetz - GMG) has basically put all social welfare recipients without health insurance on an equal footing with those with statutory health insurance in terms of benefits with effect from 1 January 2004. They are now treated as "statutory health insurance patients". All social welfare recipients are now required to make co-payments within the limits of the statutory limits.
The remaining (short-term) social welfare recipients who do not have health insurance can continue to receive health assistance.
