Passing the master craftsman examination entitles the holder to use the title of master craftsman and is certified with the master craftsman certificate.
The master craftsman examination determines whether the candidate is capable of practising a craft requiring a license and managing it independently as well as properly training apprentices. The master craftsman examination is also proof of the necessary theoretical and technical, business management, commercial, legal and vocational training knowledge.
The master craftsman examination is conducted by a state examination authority (master craftsman examination board) established at the headquarters of the relevant Chamber of Crafts. Passing the master craftsman examination entitles the holder to use the title of master craftsman and is certified with the master craftsman certificate.
The examination is divided into four independent parts:
- the examination of the masterly execution of the work customary in the respective craft (Part I),
- the examination of the required theoretical knowledge in the respective craft (Part II),
- the examination of the necessary business, commercial and legal knowledge (Part III) and
- the examination of the required vocational and work education knowledge (Part IV).
Possession of the admission certificate entitles the holder to register for the examination. The order in which the partial examinations are taken can be determined by the candidate. There is no time limit from the first to the fourth partial examination. Failed partial examinations can be repeated three times.
The prerequisite for admission to the master craftsman examination is generally a successfully completed journeyman's examination in the trade in which the master craftsman examination is to be taken. The exact admission guidelines are set out in the Crafts Code (HwO).
