You can have a service driving licence acquired for official purposes converted into a "civilian", i.e. general driving licence.

With a service driving licence from the German Armed Forces, the Federal Police and the police, you may only drive service vehicles. It is only valid for the duration of your employment.

Please note: Driving licences issued from 19 January 2013 are limited to 15 years. However, the time limit only applies to the driving licence document. This must be renewed every 15 years. Regular medical examinations or other tests are not associated with the document exchange.

• Identity card or passport
• Service driving licence or, after leaving the service, a certificate of possession of the service driving licence
• civilian driving licence (if available)
• a passport photo that complies with the passport regulations

• Re-registration with probationary period: EUR 45.90
• Re-registration without probationary period: EUR 45.10

The application must be submitted in writing to the driving licence office in your place of residence or, if offered by the competent authority, as an online application. If you apply in writing, you can obtain the application form from the driving licence office. You can also submit the written application including the necessary evidence and documents there. You can obtain the application form on site or, depending on the service, you can also download it.
