If you require information about certain stored vehicle and owner data, you can obtain simple vehicle register information. You can apply for vehicle register information if you need it to assert, secure, enforce, satisfy or defend legal claims in connection with participation in road traffic. Vehicle registration information can also be requested if there is a legitimate interest in bringing a private prosecution for offences committed in road traffic. If necessary, evidence must be provided for this.

As part of an extended vehicle register information in special cases, you will receive information on further vehicle data and owner data. Special reasons for this must be substantiated with evidence.

A loss event for which you require vehicle registration information can be caused by active or passive Participation in road traffic as a perpetrator, damaging party, victim, injured party and so on. An indirect connection with participation in road traffic is sufficient. However, the participation must have a connection to the road traffic incident. This is particularly the case if the motor vehicle is in use. However, participation in road traffic may also be present if the motor vehicle is parked. The use of the motor vehicle does not necessarily have to take place on public roads. It is sufficient if the vehicle is parked in a private car park or garage and the vehicle causes damage there, for example, or suffers damage itself, or the rights of others are infringed by the use of the vehicle, such as ownership or possession of the property.

• In particularly justified cases, vehicle data or the personal details of the vehicle owner may be provided as part of the extended vehicle register information.

You apply for vehicle registration information from the registration authority responsible for the vehicle in question. You state the reasons for your request and explain the facts from which the requirements for the provision of information may arise.

In the case of information due to a loss event, the date of the loss event (date and, if applicable, time) must be stated so that, in the event of a change of keeper in the meantime, it is possible to recognise which vehicle keeper is to be claimed against.
