You must take urgent care to apply for an extension or the issue of another residence permit (e.g. a permanent residence permit) before your residence permit expires.

If the application is submitted in good time, i.e. before the expiry of the time limit, your continued residence is deemed to be permitted until the decision of the immigration authority with all subsequent effects (e.g. authorization to pursue gainful employment). A late application (after the end of the time limit stated in the residence permit) can result in considerable legal disadvantages.

As a rule, you must apply for the extension of your residence permit in person - well in advance of the expiry of your residence permit - at your local immigration office.

If your application is approved, the foreigners authority will commission the Federal Printing Office to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT) with a new validity date.

As a rule, you will be informed of the duration of the procedure (approx. 6 to 8 weeks) by the responsible immigration authority when you apply for an extension.
