If relatives who otherwise always provide care are unable to do so, the long-term care insurance fund covers the costs of substitute care.

If you care for a relative and are temporarily absent due to vacation, illness or other reasons, you can apply for substitute care. These prevention care benefits are available to care recipients in care grades 2 to 5 who are being cared for at home.

Preventive care is not granted if the person in need of care - before the substitute case occurred - was cared for exclusively by a care service.

Preventive care can be provided by an outpatient care service or by a trusted person (relatives, friends, neighbors). Placement in an inpatient care facility is also possible.

If the care is provided by persons who are not related to the person in need of care by blood or marriage up to the second degree and who do not live in the same household as the person in need of care, the long-term care insurance fund will cover the costs up to 1,612 euros per calendar year.

If close relatives who do not live in the household take over the substitute care, the amount paid by the nursing care insurance fund may not exceed 1.5 times the actual nursing care allowance.

If necessary expenses of the substitute caregiver (for example, travel costs or loss of earnings) are added (proof required), the benefit can be increased up to a total of 1,612 euros.

In addition to preventive care, up to 50 percent of the amount actually intended for short-term care (up to 806 euros in a calendar year) can be used for preventive care. This means that up to 2,418 euros per calendar year are available for preventive care.

People in need of care with care levels 2 to 5 can apply for preventive care for 6 weeks per calendar year.

• At least care degree 2 must be available.
• Persons in need of care must have been cared for at home by a private caregiver (relatives, friends) for at least 6 months previously

The application is free of charge.

• If the private caregiver is prevented from providing care, persons in need of care with care level 2 - 5 can apply for preventive care
• Applies only to persons in need of care who are cared for at home
• Benefit amounts to up to 1,612 euros per calendar year
• Can be applied for six weeks per calendar year

The responsibility lies with the respective long-term care insurance fund.
