If you require proof of birth from the former German territories or from the consular and colonial registers, you can apply for a birth certificate. You can obtain this from the registry office I in Berlin.
With a birth certificate you can prove the birth of a person, his or her first and last names and the details of the parents. You can have a birth certificate issued on the basis of an existing birth register. If the place of birth is outside of the Federal Republic of Germany, the birth may be registered at Standesamt I in Berlin.
To apply for a birth certificate, you will need
- if the application is made by a person representing you:
- written power of attorney from the authorized person,
- their identity card or passport (original or certified copy)
- and the identity card or passport of the person representing you
- certain persons must also provide credible evidence of a legal or legitimate interest.
Civil status certificates contain personal data, so their issue is subject to data protection restrictions.
- Authorized applicants (minimum age: 16 years):
- the person to whom the birth certificate relates
- the spouse or civil partner (within the meaning of the Registered Civil Partnership Act)
- Ancestors and descendants of the person concerned
- Siblings with a legitimate interest
- Other persons, including close relatives such as aunts and uncles, will only receive a certificate if they can credibly demonstrate a legal interest (e.g. by means of a letter from the probate court).
- In principle, a certificate can also be applied for in analog form, but we strongly recommend using the online application to speed up the processing procedure.
- In addition to yourself, a person you trust may also order the certificate on your behalf. A written power of attorney is required for this.
- You will receive a notification of fees when the certificate is sent to you.
If the issuance of the certificate is refused, an application for an order can (only) be filed with the Schöneberg Local Court in Berlin. The appeal procedure is only possible with regard to the fee notice.

- Certificates should be ordered via an online application, but can also be ordered in paper form.
