Your legal training ends with the second state examination. If you successfully pass the examination, you will be qualified to hold the office of judge and are entitled to use the title "Assessor".

The examination consists of 8 supervisory papers lasting 5 hours and an oral examination. Upon successful completion of the examination, a certificate is issued by the State Judicial Examination Office.

The legal preparatory service ends with the Second State Examination in Law. After successfully passing the examination, the State Judicial Examination Office will issue you with a certificate stating the overall grade and total number of points achieved. You will then be qualified to hold the office of judge and may use the title "Assessor".

The second state examination in law is held twice a year in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The examination consists of a written and an oral part. In the written part, there are eight written assignments, each of which takes five hours to complete. Four of these papers are from civil law, two from criminal law and two from public law. The oral part of the examination consists of a presentation and one examination section each from civil law, criminal law, public law and your chosen area of specialization.

You can take the Second State Examination in Law if you are in the legal preparatory service in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The President of the Higher Regional Court will present you to the State Judicial Examination Office for the examination. You do not need to submit your own application to the State Judicial Examination Office.

If you passed the second state law examination when you first took it in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, you can repeat the examination in order to improve your grade. You must repeat the examination in full on the next available examination date. After submitting your application, you will receive a request to pay the fees for the grade improvement procedure. You must transfer these fees on time in order to be admitted to the grade improvement procedure.

Kosten

There are no fees for taking the exam for the first time.

There are no fees for taking the Second State Examination in Law for the first time.

To retake the Second State Examination in Law for the purpose of improving your grade, you must pay a fee of 450 euros within two weeks of receiving a written request from the State Examination Office. These are to be paid in advance. The fees are reduced in certain cases, for example, if you decide not to continue with the written examination after the result.

Verfahrensablauf

Admission to the examination is automatic after successful completion of the training stations, so that a separate application for admission is not necessary.

Each candidate will be invited by the examination office to prepare the examination papers. The examination papers are completed in the 20th month of training over a period of 2 weeks. After completing the papers, the candidate completes the elective station of the preparatory service, while the supervisory papers are assessed by 2 examiners. The candidate is then summoned to the examination, which takes place at the beginning of the 25th month of training. This consists of a presentation and 5 examination interviews (civil law, criminal law, public law, lawyer and focus). Passing the examination marks the end of the legal traineeship.

After you have been presented by the President of the Higher Regional Court for the Second State Examination in Law, you will be invited to take the written part of the examination. The written part of the examination takes place in the 21st month of training over a period of approximately two weeks. After the written examination, you will continue your preparatory service in the elective stage. If you pass the written examination, you will be invited to the oral examination, which will take place at the beginning of the 25th month of training after completing the elective station.

During the grade improvement procedure, you are no longer in the preparatory service. Once the application has been submitted, it will be reviewed. You will then be asked to pay the fees. If you have paid on time, you will be invited to the written examination.

The examination procedure takes just under 6 months.

You must apply for a grade improvement at the examination office at least 2 weeks before the desired examination date. You must also pay the examination fee within this period. If there is a shorter period between the first oral examination and the next examination date, you can retake the examination to improve your grade on the third examination date following the oral examination.

You do not need to submit an application to take the Second State Examination in Law for the first time and therefore do not need to observe any application deadlines.
