Your intermediate examination takes place about halfway through the training period. The intermediate examination is a knowledge assessment and is intended to provide you and the training company with feedback on the knowledge you have acquired to date.
The subject of the intermediate examination is the skills, knowledge and abilities specified in the training regulations as well as the subject matter from the vocational school lessons. The intermediate examination is intended to give you and your training company an impression of your respective level of performance Participation in the intermediate examination is a prerequisite for admission to the final examination. The results of the intermediate examination are an important indicator for you if you wish to be admitted early to the final examination.
Intermediate examinations consist of a written examination part and, if necessary, a further practical examination part. Both parts of the exam are usually held on different days. The written part of the exam is usually held nationwide on a fixed day at the same time.
An intermediate examination is held regionally by the responsible bodies (e.g. Chamber of Industry and Commerce) for all trainees around halfway through the training period. The date is specified in the training regulations.
If you have concluded a training contract with a company, this training relationship has been reported to the regionally responsible body (e.g. Chamber of Industry and Commerce) by your training company. The competent body therefore knows the period in which you must take your intermediate examination. You will therefore be notified of the examination by the competent body in a letter or electronically.
The regionally competent body organizes the conduct of the intermediate examination in consultation with the examination board, which works on a voluntary basis. The examination board, consisting of employer representatives, employee representatives and teacher representatives, will take and evaluate your examination performance.
The examination result determined by the examination board is forwarded to the responsible office. You will receive the results in the form of a certificate of attendance.
Intermediate examinations are only held in occupations where the training regulations do not stipulate a final examination in two parts.
Participation in intermediate examinations is mandatory for all trainees.
However, you may not be required to take an intermediate examination if you have already completed another apprenticeship of at least two years.
Upon request, you can also take part in an intermediate examination as a participant in retraining, but then you or the measure provider must bear the costs for the examination.
