The costs are divided into a fee and production costs. The fee is charged by the responsible authority and depends on the respective fee schedule. The production costs depend on the size and nature of the footpath crossing (possibly also for tree replacement planting or light pole relocation). Both cost components must be borne by the applicant.

You can apply for a footpath crossing in writing (by post, e-mail, fax). It is also possible to use an online service. The procedure remains the same. The footpath crossing is constructed either by the responsible authority or by an approved company. The following procedure must be followed until the crossing is constructed:

• You apply for the footpath crossing with all the necessary documents to the responsible body.
• As soon as the application has been submitted, a check is carried out to determine whether there are any reasons why the footpath crossing should not be constructed.
• For more extensive measures, you must organize and carry out an on-site appointment in advance together with the responsible authority.
• Once your application has been approved, you will receive a notice of approval and can have the footpath crossing constructed (subject to possible conditions and requirements).
• You will be required to make an advance payment based on the production costs.
• Once the work has been completed, you will receive an invoice for payment of the remaining construction costs, less the advance payment made.

If the sidewalk crossing is constructed by the responsible authority:

• You do not need to take any further steps to complete the work.

If the footpath crossing is constructed by an approved company:

• The contracted company must apply for a traffic authority order for the measure.

After completion of the construction work, arrange a joint acceptance date with the responsible authority.

• The processing time distinguishes between application processing and construction of the footpath crossing.
• Application processing: usually promptly.
• Construction of the footpath crossing by the responsible body: at least 3 months.

There is no deadline.

• If the application is made in connection with a building project for which planning permission is required, the planning permission automatically includes permission to construct a footpath crossing. No separate application is required.
• The footpath crossing may not be constructed by the owner, for example with wooden beams, steel ramps or similar. This is an unauthorized intervention in the road space and may be punishable by law.
• Approval for the construction of a footpath crossing does not replace other necessary official approvals or entitlements, for example for the construction of a garage or a carport.
